To answer some of your questions, I wrote NOTES because a bunch of my 8th grade students misbehaved for a sub. I made them write apology notes, but none of them took any responsibility whatsoever. That got me to thinking, "What if a fairly good kid did something really stupid, and then refused to apologize?"
Then I threw in a parental divorce (which happened to me when I was in H.S.), and Sol, who is modeled on my real-life Grampa Sol.
By the way, I chose drunk driving as Alex's stupid move because several of my former students have died or lost family members in drunk-driving accidents.
OK, gotta go back to writing. I'm trying to come up with a good title for the sequel to DRUMS, GIRLS & DANGEROUS PIE. I wrote a first draft this summer, but couldn't come up with a decent title.
